Scientists stunned by surface of asteroid Vesta
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The first close-up pictures of the massive asteroid Vesta reveal a northern hemisphere littered with craters — including a trio nicknamed “Snowman” — and a smoother southern half, researchers reported Monday.
Running along the asteroid’s equator are deep grooves — a surprise to scientists who did not expect to see such features.
“We’re seeing quite a varied surface,” said chief scientist Christopher Russell of the University of California, Los Angeles. The images were taken by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which began orbiting the 330-mile-wide rocky body last month and beaming back incredible surface details that the team is only beginning to pore over. It’s the first time that Vesta has been viewed up close. Until now, it has only been photographed from afar. continue reading
South Africa opens bidding for ‘green’ energy projects
The South African government on Thursday opened a bidding process for private companies to launch “green” energy projects to feed the national grid, in a bid to improve the power supply.
The government will accept proposals for wind, solar and small hydro-electric projects, as well as projects to create energy from gases emitted by landfills and biological waste, the department of energy said in a statement.
The process is part of the government’s plan to double South Africa’s power supply by adding more than 50,000 megawatts of electricity to the grid, with 30 percent of new power generation slated to come from independent power producers. continue reading
Coast’s only zoo mourns lions starved during vote conflict
The grungy lion cages in the Ivory Coast’s only zoo stand empty after its three lions starved to death in April as forces for rival presidents battled in the city around them.
Around 40 animals in the Abidjan zoo lost their lives in the months-long conflict that ended on April 11 with the arrest of ex-president Laurent Gbagbo, who had lost November elections. continue reading
But Lea, Simba and Loulou — the pride of the animal collection and who came from Ethiopia — are missed the most.
They died of hunger, said Claude-Sie Kam, who has been in charge of carnivores at the complex for 14 years, pointing to the empty concrete cages set among verdant foliage in west Africa’s biggest zoo.
“Their death pained me, they were pets,” he said.
The zoo is situated at what was a flashpoint for the fighting that gripped Abidjan for around 10 days in April — the culmination of a conflict that built over months.
Valedictorian sues Arkansas school for discrimination. But is race really the only issue?
by Lylah M. Alphonse, Senior Editor, Manage Your Life (from Yahoo)
A black student who was named valedictorian of her class is suing her high school after school officials insisted that she share the honor with a white student who had a lower GPA.
“When I found out I was valedictorian, I was ecstatic,” Kymberly Wimberly, 18, told ABC News.
She had worked hard to stay at the top of her class at McGehee High School in southeast Arkansas. After giving birth to a daughter during her junior year, she took only three weeks off from school, returning in time to ace her finals. She earned just one B during her four years at McGehee, and made up for it by filling her schedule with honors and AP courses which, according to the state-mandated scoring system, carry more weight in GPA calculations.
“I’m not going to say it wasn’t difficult,” she said. “My teachers thought I’d fall flat on my face, but I kept trying to succeed.” continue reading
8 Things You Should Never Say to Your Husband
by Denise Schipani (from Yahoo)
One of the best parts about marriage is being so comfortable with your hubby that you can say just about anything to him. But if you don’t watch your mouth, sometimes the ugly truth comes out in hurtful—not helpful––ways. Though you may have legitimate concerns to express or issues to bring up, doing so in a harsh manner can be damaging in the long term, to both your husband’s feelings and your relationship. According to Judy Ford, psychotherapist and author of Every Day Love, “Speaking kindly is a skill that couples have to learn. Everyone feels battered by life and the outside world. You shouldn’t feel that way at home.” Here, nine statements that you should never utter to your significant other––and the words that you should try instead. continue reading
